Plot summary
After the war, Karin, a Lithuanian woman displaced in Italy, lives in an internment camp and wants to reach Argentina, but she cannot secure her own release. She agrees to marry Antonio, a former prisoner of war who fishes, and he brings her to Stromboli, the volcanic island between the Italian mainland and Sicily where he grew up. The land is harsh and mostly barren, and many of its people have already left for the United States. The islanders keep to old customs, and Karin, who does not speak their dialect, is treated by them as a foreign woman of loose morals. She grows despondent as her marriage demands a life she cannot accept.

- Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini's extramarital affair began during the shoot and caused such a scandal that church groups, women's clubs and legislators in over a dozen US states called for the film to be banned, and Colorado Senator Edwin C. Johnson denounced Bergman on the Senate floor. Her Hollywood career was halted for years until she won an Academy Award for Anastasia.
- Rossellini's contract with RKO required all footage to be handed over for an American version, but the US cut was made without his input; he protested that RKO's 81-minute version was radically different from his original 105-minute one.
- The film grew out of a famous fan letter from Ingrid Bergman to Roberto Rossellini, in which she told him she admired his work and wanted to make a movie with him.
