Plot summary
Rumors persist that the Grand Duchess Anastasia survived the 1918 execution of the Tsar and his family. In 1928 Paris, General Bounine, once a White Army commander and now the owner of a Russian-themed nightclub, has told his stockholders that he has found her. The woman he produces is Anna Koreff, an ailing amnesiac who was treated in a mental asylum and who once told a nun that she was Anastasia; she wants nothing to do with him and flees to the River Seine. The stockholders, promised a share of the ten million pounds a British bank holds for Tsar Nicholas, give Bounine a deadline. He begins training Anna to present herself as the grand duchess, a claim that the exiled Russian aristocracy, above all the Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna, must be brought to accept.

- The film's claimant was inspired by the real Anna Anderson, born Franziska Schanzkowska, institutionalized in a Berlin mental hospital in 1920 after a suicide attempt and later identified by White Russian émigrés as Anastasia.
