Plot summary
Twenty-one-year-old Toni Simmons believes her lover, Julian Winston, a Manhattan dentist, is married with three children and stays with them for their sake. Julian has no wife and no children; he says otherwise to avoid entanglement. On the anniversary of their affair he is out with another woman, and Toni, thinking him at home with his family, tries to end her life with gas from her stove. Her neighbor, the aspiring writer Igor Sullivan, smells the gas and brings her back. When Julian hears what she did, he says they will marry and that his wife is ready to divorce. Toni, unwilling to break up a home, wants to meet the woman first. Julian asks Stephanie Dickinson, his nurse and receptionist, to act the part of his wife.
