Plot summary
By the winter of 1938, Paris is full of exiles who have fled Nazi Germany and live in fear of deportation. Dr. Ravic is one of them: a physician who cannot practice openly, he treats other refugees illegally under a false name. At the same time he hunts von Haake, the Nazi officer who tortured the woman he loved and who is now in the city in civilian dress. One rainy night he saves Joan Madou from killing herself after her lover dies suddenly. She had been kept by that man and has nowhere to turn. Though Ravic resists the attachment, he and Joan become involved.

- Laurence Olivier was offered the male lead and wanted Simone Signoret cast opposite him, but Enterprise Studios' production head Charles Einfeld wanted a bigger female star, so Ingrid Bergman was cast; Bergman also insisted on Lewis Milestone as director and Charles Boyer as her co-star.
- Joseph Breen, head of the MPAA's Production Code Administration, made the studio tone down the script's violence, and though he objected that the murder went unpunished he relented because it was a war story.
- The rough cut of the film ran four hours long, and several subplots and at least one actor were cut to bring it down to two hours.
