Biography
Liv Ullmann is a Norwegian actress and filmmaker who started as a stage actress in Norway in the mid-1950s and earned recognition for her portrayal of Nora Helmer in Ibsen's A Doll's House. Born in Tokyo and raised in Norway, she is best known for her work with Ingmar Bergman, acting in ten of his films, among them Cries and Whispers (1972), Autumn Sonata (1978), and The Passion of Anna (1969). She also appeared in the television drama Scenes from a Marriage (1973) and received an Academy Award nomination for Face to Face (1976). She won a Golden Globe for The Emigrants. As a director, she made her debut with Sofie (1992) and directed Faithless (2000), which was nominated for the Palme d'Or. In 2022, she received an Academy Honorary Award.

A role that slipped away
In 1982, Bergman wrote the part of Emelie Ekdahl in Fanny and Alexander with Ullmann in mind, wanting her for his last feature film. She said no because the role felt too sad, and later called that choice one of her few real regrets.

Ullmann turned down an offer in November 2003 to appear in three episodes of Sex and the City, a show she said was one of the few she watched regularly, and also declined a role Steven Soderbergh wrote especially for her in Ocean's Twelve.
Behind the camera
Ullmann directed Cate Blanchett in a Sydney Theatre Company production of A Streetcar Named Desire that ran in 2009 and later won a Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Non-resident Production.
