Plot summary
Adam Stoddard is a wealthy man with a wife, Molly, and four sons. Emilie Gallatin comes to the household as the boys' governess. Molly dies, and Adam and the boys come to rely on Emilie; she falls in love with Adam. The stock-market crash of 1907 takes Adam's money. The boys go to boarding school, and elderly Cousin Phillipa pays the tuition. Emilie returns to France. Adam rebuilds his fortune and sends for her. The three older boys serve in World War I.

- The film's screenplay departs sharply from Charles Bonner's novel Legacy: in the book Adam has five sons, he commits a murder, and one of his sons commits suicide, none of which appear in the film.
