Curt Bois
Biography
Curt Bois was a German actor whose career on stage and screen spanned more than eighty years. Born in Berlin, he started acting in 1907 and appeared in shorts including Bauernhaus und Grafenschloß and Der Kleine Detektiv. He worked in theater, cabaret, musicals, silent films, and sound films, performed under Max Reinhardt, and found stage success in Charley's Aunt in Vienna in 1928. After leaving Germany in 1934, he moved to the United States, worked on Broadway, and reached Hollywood by 1937. His best-known film role was the pickpocket in Casablanca (1942); he also had a notable supporting part in Caught (1949) as Franzi Kartos. Most Hollywood roles were small, but he was in demand. He returned to Germany in 1950 and later acted at the Schiller Theater and Theater des Westens. In Wings of Desire (1987) he played the aged poet Homer and won the European Film Award as Best Supporting Actor. He died in Berlin in 1991.
