Plot summary
New South Wales receives a new governor in 1831, and his young cousin Charles Adare comes out from Ireland with him, penniless but hoping to build a fortune in Sydney. A banker introduces him to Sam Flusky, a rich landowner with a convict past, who proposes that Charles buy a parcel of land and pass it on to him, since Sam has already reached the legal limit on such purchases. The governor forbids the deal. Charles disobeys and attends a dinner at Sam's house, where he recognizes the host's wife, Henrietta, as Lady Henrietta, a neighbor from his Irish childhood. She drinks heavily and seems close to madness, and the household is ruled by the housekeeper Milly. Sam urges Charles to come again, hoping his friendship will lift her spirits.
