Plot summary
After their parents die in an accident, Abby and Loren McWilliams go to Glenby, Florida, where their uncle Charlie and aunt Fay run a gas station and a small amusement park. Both settle in quickly at the new high school: Loren dates Karen, the sheriff's daughter, and Abby begins seeing Mark. In the cafeteria, Loren sees a blond student bothering his sister, and Mark names him: Eddie Dutra, a drug-addicted teenager at the head of a gang of redneck thugs. Dutra wants Abby, and he and Gideon both compete to win her over, though she finds them repellent. Loren keeps the pair away from her, and the gang answers with reprisals.
