Plot summary
At the start of the 1990s, a group of twentysomethings in Seattle shares an apartment building whose sign advertises singles. Janet Livermore, an architecture student who waits tables at a coffee bar, is in love with Cliff Poncier, the front man of the band Citizen Dick, and he has told her plainly that he does not consider them exclusive. Steve Dunne, who is preparing a speed train proposal for the city, meets the environmentalist Linda Powell at a club. He is ready at once; she has a recent history of poor choices in men, most recently Luiz, who deceived her. Debbie Hunt, with no boyfriend, takes up the video dating service her friends gave her as a gag gift.

- According to Art Linson, $50,000 was budgeted for the role of Cliff; Matt Dillon wanted to play it but his fee was $1 million and the studio would not pay it, and after negotiations he took the part for $400,000.
- During the making of the film Jeff Ament produced a list of song titles for the fictional band Citizen Dick, and Chris Cornell took it as a challenge to write songs using those titles: “Spoonman” was one of them.
- Warner Bros. pushed new titles on the film, among them In the Midnight Hour, Love in Seattle and Leave Me a Message, and after the success of Nirvana came up with Come as You Are; Cameron Crowe wrote, “I am powerless to stop them.”
- Cameron Crowe rewrote the script after the death of the singer Andy Wood, wanting to capture “the story of how people instinctively need to be together. Is anybody truly single?”
- Eric Stoltz, who had been in other Cameron Crowe films such as Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Say Anything..., had a cameo as a mime, and he and Bridget Fonda were dating at the time.
- Warner Bros. Television immediately tried to turn Singles into a television series, and Cameron Crowe claimed that Singles inspired the television series Friends.
- Johnny Depp was offered the role of Steve Dunne but declined; Campbell Scott was cast on the same day he was cast as Julia Roberts' co-star in Dying Young, which would be filmed first.
