Plot summary
Keith Nelson is a blue-collar mechanic in San Pedro who wants to be an artist. His best friend is Watts, a tomboy who plays drums. Keith's father, Cliff, is set on sending him to business college, which would make Keith the first in the family to go. Keith wants to date Amanda Jones, a popular girl at school who goes out with Hardy Jenns, a spoiled boy from a wealthy neighborhood. Amanda is not rich herself. Keith gets into trouble to spend time near her, and she talks her way out of it. Watts is dismissive of his crush.

- Hughes wanted Ringwald to play the female lead role of Watts, but she declined in order to pursue more adult roles and thought the character of Amanda seemed too similar to her role in The Breakfast Club; Hughes took the refusal personally and it ended their working relationship.
- Hughes named the three main protagonists, Keith, Watts and Amanda Jones, as an inside-joke tribute to the Rolling Stones: Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and the Stones' song "Miss Amanda Jones".
- Deutch offered Lea Thompson the role of Amanda and she turned him down, only accepting a second offer after her film Howard the Duck flopped; she and Deutch started dating once filming was completed and married in 1989.
- Unhappy with Coolidge, Hughes fired her and hired Deutch to direct, and the original cast members Kim Delaney, cast as Amanda Jones, and Kyle MacLachlan, cast as Hardy Jenns, were fired shortly after.
- Five weeks into filming Back to the Future, Stoltz was let go from the production and replaced with Michael J. Fox, while his co-star Thompson stayed on in the film.
- Deutch and Hughes were unhappy with the ending of Pretty in Pink: in the script and the original cut, Andy (Molly Ringwald) wound up with her best friend Duckie (Jon Cryer), but test audiences disliked it and a new ending was shot with Blane (Andrew McCarthy).
