Plot summary
Lily Bart, an impoverished socialite in early 20th century New York who has grown used to comfort and luxury, lives with her wealthy aunt Julia Peniston on a small allowance, alongside her cousin Grace Stepney. Her prospects come down to marriage: the rising financier Simon Rosedale, the wealthy Percy Gryce, or Lawrence Selden, a lawyer she admires but who is too poor to consider. Her friend Judy Trenor pushes her toward Gryce. Lily prefers Selden, and one country weekend the two walk together and kiss; Gryce, twice stood up by her, leaves. Frightened about money, she takes her troubles to Judy's husband, Gus Trenor, who says he can help her earn through investment.
