Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- James Spader was cast as Ronnie Stover after his friend Eric Stoltz read the script and convinced the producer he would be great as a drug dealer, returning the favour after Spader had helped Stoltz get cast in 2 Days in the Valley.
- The soundtrack prominently features the Australian didgeridoo, played by Graham Wiggins, and the strip routine by Joanna Going's character Cherry uses the 1994 song "Little Suicides" by Lori Carson and The Golden Palominos, even though the novel was set in the late 1980s.
- Though Keys to Tulsa is set entirely in Tulsa, Oklahoma, it was shot in both Dallas, Texas and Tulsa, and the scenes at Richter's newspaper offices were filmed in the headquarters of the Dallas Observer.
