Plot summary
Jake Briggs, a young aspiring playwright, tells his own story, looking back from his car while he talks about his girlfriend, Joanne White, and about who a person turns to for help in life. In flashback he recalls growing up with his parents, Shirley and Roman, his father often absent, in a house across from a peanut factory that squirrels overran, then college, where he wrote plays and met Joanne, who was into photography, and his gay best friend, Chris. Jake and Joanne move in together. Joanne meets Elliot Price, who owns a gallery, and goes to work for him.
