Plot summary
Nick sells things for a living in a small Arizona town, and he has come to rebel against the life he has there. He leaves his girlfriend Beth behind and takes to the highway looking for something else. Carol, Beth's best friend, encourages her to accept the romantic attentions of Sid, a housepainter in the town, and Beth agrees, reluctantly. Four people find that their interests in life and in each other start to change, and part of the story is set in the Arizona desert, at small gas stations.
