Plot summary
Three teenagers live in the suburbs of Los Angeles. Bill Conrad has just finished high school and moved into his first apartment. His younger brother Jim is fixated on the Vietnam War, practices with nunchakus, gets high and listens to heavy metal on his boombox, and hangs out with Charlie, a Vietnam veteran. Tom Drake, a hedonistic high school wrestling champion, works shifts with Bill at a bowling alley. Anita, Bill's ex-girlfriend, works at a donut shop and has a fling with David, a police officer. Her friend Eileen, Tom's girlfriend, works at a department store managed by Harry.

- Eddie Van Halen wrote and performed the score for The Wild Life but could not finish mixing because of Van Halen's touring schedule, leaving the job to the band's long-time engineer Donn Landee; "Donut City" was his only track on the official soundtrack album.
- Eddie Van Halen's instrumental "Out The Window" was used the next year in the "Darth Vader" scene of Back to the Future, and The Wild Life also featured an early version of Van Halen's 1992 song "Right Now".
- James L. Brooks admired The Wild Life, and that admiration led to him collaborating with its writer Cameron Crowe on Say Anything.
- Before writing it, Cameron Crowe spent a few months on a film about The Doors, lost enthusiasm, and decided he really wanted to write about a kid's fascination with the 1960s and Jim Morrison.
- Licensing fees for songs by Prince, Madonna, Little Richard, Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix and others kept The Wild Life from ever getting an uncut DVD release; Universal's made-to-order Vault Series disc dropped many of the songs.
