Plot summary

Lucy Bonnard and her older sister Charlotte run the Willows, the Louisiana bayou plantation their family owns, as an inn. Lucy has a history of mental illness. Etienne LeViolette, her childhood friend and the sisters' handyman, courts her without success. Charlotte's romance with the town sheriff ends when he blames her devotion to Lucy's care. Late one night a guest checks in: Matt Rutledge, a congressional aide from Washington, D.C., who finds himself drawn to Lucy. A mother, her daughter and her son-in-law arrive too. A storm cuts the power, and Lucy entertains the guests with a ghost story about Jud Nevins, who went missing in the bayou years earlier; other spirits there, she says, keep her safe from him.
