Plot summary
Bernard Flannigan is a high school outsider, and he is young to be running for a seat on the Livingston School Board. Veronica Krauss, ranked second in their class, is his friend and stands with him in the campaign. Bernard's retired grandfather, Oswald Flannigan, and Veronica's mother, Janet Krauss, who works behind the scenes on a television show, guide the two of them through local politics. Barbara runs the local newspaper, Mr. Del Tufo belongs to the school board, and Bernard's friend Bagger works at the supermarket. The race takes the pair beyond their ordinary school life, and along the way they learn something about love.
