Plot summary
On the Amazon River, a film crew is shooting a documentary about the Shirishama, a long-lost indigenous tribe. Terri Flores directs, and her crew includes the cameraman Danny Rich, the production manager Denise Kalberg, the sound engineer Gary Dixon, the narrator Warren Westridge, the anthropologist Steven Cale and the boat skipper Mateo. On the river they meet Paul Serone, a Paraguayan snake hunter who is stranded, and he claims he can lead them to the tribe. Most of the crew keep their distance, and Cale quarrels with him over Shirishama lore. When a wasp sting swells Cale's throat and knocks him out, Serone cuts into his neck to save him. Serone is on the river for a quarry of his own: a giant green anaconda.

- Hans Bauer said the idea for Anaconda came from a false memory of the original King Kong, in which he thought King Kong was fighting a giant snake; in fact it was a giant lizard, but Bauer had not noticed the feet.
- Two mechanical snakes were built for the production by Walt Conti, one 25 feet long and another 40 feet long. Director Luis Llosa also used real anacondas for certain shots, while the major attack sequences were accomplished with computer-generated imagery.
- Shooting took place on location in Brazil, but the more claustrophobic sequences at the climax of the film were shot at the Fantasy Island lagoon at the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden.
- The broadcast of the movie during primetime viewing on the South African television station e.tv has become a national running gag, with the station airing the movie several times every year since the mid-2000s.
- Despite the initial negative reception, Anaconda has become a cult classic, and it is listed in Golden Raspberry Award founder John Wilson's book The Official Razzie Movie Guide as one of The 100 Most Enjoyably Bad Movies Ever Made.
