Trailer

Plot summary

Veronica Quaife dies giving birth to a larval sac, which opens on a seemingly normal baby boy. Anton Bartok, who runs the company that paid for Seth Brundle's teleportation work, takes the child in and calls him Martin, raising him inside the Bartok complex. Martin matures far faster than a normal child and has a genius intellect, quick reflexes and no need for sleep; he is told his father died of the same rapid aging condition. At three he has the body of a ten-year-old and roams the facility at night. On his fifth birthday, in a twenty-five-year-old body, he agrees to repair his father's Telepods for Bartok and befriends an employee, Beth Logan.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Fly II (1989)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Writer Mick Garris said he and producer Stuart Cornfeld wanted something smart and adult in the realm of the brilliant Cronenberg movie that preceded it, but Leonard Goldberg, producer of The Love Boat and other such TV shows, became studio chief at Fox and wanted a teenage monster movie. They had to give in.
  • SPOILERGeena Davis, who played Veronica Quaife in the first film, refused to reprise the role because her character's death in the first act left no opportunity for character development. Saffron Henderson replaced her for the sequel.
  • Keanu Reeves was offered the lead role of Martin Brundle but turned it down because he disliked the script, and Josh Brolin was passed over after a failed audition for the same part.
  • According to Mel Brooks, Davis initiated a third film, developing the story and serving as a producer, with production slated to begin in the fall of 1993. It would have shifted focus from her character Ronnie to the mutated twins she conceived with Seth Brundle, but it never came to be.
  • Frank Darabont was brought in to finish the script, and Chris Walas said he brought some real powerful dynamics to the story and gave the major drama more power: the whole dog scene was Darabont's idea.
  • Early in development Tim Burton was a director for consideration. Mick Garris was hired to write and direct The Fly II and wrote multiple drafts before losing patience with the production and joining Critters 2, having liked that script and New Line Cinema's offer of creative input.
