Plot summary
Brian Bloom is a struggling writer of 24 in New York City. He meets Arielle Pierpont, a French former model of 33, while she smokes outside the St. Regis Hotel one Friday afternoon, and they arrange to see each other again the next week. She then tells him she is married to Valéry, a French diplomat, and that they have two young children. Under their open marriage each may take lovers, but only on weeknights between 5 and 7 p.m. Brian says he cannot go along with it.

- 5 to 7 was inspired by a French couple whom writer-director Victor Levin met in 1987; they had an open marriage in which each spouse had an extramarital lover, an arrangement Levin called "terribly civilized".
- Victor Levin wrote Anton Yelchin a "beseeching" letter asking him to star in 5 to 7 after seeing him in Like Crazy; Yelchin never received the letter but agreed to the role anyway.
- Diane Kruger was announced in 2012 as the lover opposite Anton Yelchin in 5 to 7, but she was later replaced by Bérénice Marlohe.
- For 5 to 7, Levin sent interns to hunt for interesting inscriptions on Central Park benches; about thirty were filmed on the last day of shooting, and the crew adopted a bench whose plaque appears at the end of the credits.
- Director Victor Levin and cinematographer Arnaud Potier used minimalistic wide shots and long takes to avoid "reminding the audience that it's a movie" with unnecessary cuts.
- Victor Levin initially planned a jazz soundtrack for 5 to 7 but found classical music more apt after completing the filming.
