Plot summary
Bronco Bob Mitchell's name is on a string of best-selling Western novels, but he has never set foot in the West, and a newspaper story has told his readers so. To repair the damage he rides in a Long Island charity rodeo, where a loose steer escapes while he is on a horse nearby and he is thrown. Cowgirl Anne Shaw bulldogs the animal to save him. The rescue injures her, ends her chance at the $10,000 prize, and she returns to the dude ranch her father owns in Arizona, angry at his city manner. Bob follows to make amends. Willoughby and Duke, peanut vendors at the same rodeo, cause havoc, hide from their boss in a cattle car, and are carried west to that same ranch, where the foreman Alabam' takes them on.

- Jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald made her first screen appearance in Ride 'Em Cowboy, playing Ruby, one of the employees at the dude ranch.
- The film introduced the song "I'll Remember April", sung by Dick Foran; in the 1950s and 1960s it became a favorite of jazz musicians, whose improvisation suited its chord changes.
- The song "Cow-Cow Boogie", written by Bennie Carter, was cut from Ride 'Em Cowboy, but Dorothy Dandridge, who appears in the film uncredited as a dancer, later sang it in a short film of the same name.
