Plot summary
Kerry Bradford, a Union officer, stages an escape from Libby Prison, where Vance Irby is commandant. At Union headquarters he is handed a new assignment: Virginia City, a Nevada mining town where Southern sympathizers hold five million dollars in gold meant for the Confederacy, and he is to learn where it is kept. On the westbound stagecoach he meets Julia Hayne, a dance-hall entertainer, and John Murrell, a gun salesman whose banditos mean to rob the coach. Bradford gets the drop on Murrell and forces him to send his men away. In Virginia City he trails Irby, now running the gold-smuggling operation, to a concealed room behind a blacksmith's shop.

- Stuntman Yakima Canutt was responsible for the film's most spectacular stunt, his signature stagecoach move: he leaps onto the backs of the galloping team, drops below and works his way back to climb aboard the stagecoach from the rear.
- Victor Jory was set to play the main villain of Virginia City, but a scheduling conflict with his appearance in The Light of Western Stars cost him the part; Humphrey Bogart replaced him, forcing It All Came True to be pushed back.
- Olivia de Havilland dropped out of the film and was replaced by Brenda Marshall, but within a few weeks Marshall was in turn replaced by Miriam Hopkins.
