Plot summary
Don Carlos, an elderly Spanish duke, has been chosen as the husband of Marie, a princess of France, and she refuses the match. She takes the name and place of Marietta, her uncle's former servant, and boards a ship bound for New Orleans with the casquette girls, young women traveling to marry colonists. On board she befriends Julie. When the women talk about the husbands they hope to find, Marietta says she means to marry no one. Pirates board the ship and take the women ashore. Marietta hears singing in the distance, seizes a torch and runs toward it, calling for help. Captain Richard Warrington and his mercenaries drive the pirates off and rescue the women. Warrington sings to Marietta, and though he is drawn to her, he says he will not marry.
