Plot summary
In Paris, Gogo, a boy of English extraction, lives next door to Mimsey, and the two are friendly but often fight. His mother dies, and an uncle carries him off to England, where he is given an English name from his mother's side of the family: Peter Ibbetson. As a grown man, Peter works as an architect and has little time for women. He takes on restoration work in Yorkshire for the Duke of Towers and meets the duke's wife, Mary. The duke is a peer of the realm. Peter and Mary fall in love, and she loves him in return, though she is already married.

- Robert Donat and Fredric March were reportedly considered for the role of Peter Ibbetson, and Miriam Hopkins was first offered the part of Mary. Director Henry Hathaway cast Gary Cooper, previously known for Westerns and heroic dramas such as A Farewell to Arms, against type.
