Plot summary
Poverty follows Roderick Raskolnikov even after he graduates with honors and wins a name as an expert on crime. When his family announces a visit, he takes the heirloom watch he was given at graduation to a pawnbroker, watches the old woman trade Sonya, a streetwalker who keeps her family, a single ruble for her Bible, then shove her out the door, and passes Sonya the money his watch brought. His mother and his sister Toni arrive; Toni has lost her job because Grilov, the husband of the woman she worked for, made advances toward her, and in the family's poverty she has agreed to marry the aging Lushin. Desperate for money, Roderick kills the pawnbroker.

- Josef von Sternberg was contractually obliged to make the film and disliked it, later saying it was no more related to the true text of Dostoevsky's novel than the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Gower is to the Russian environment.
- Production Code officials reviewed a recent stage adaptation of the novel and warned that the police's failure to arrest the student Raskolnikov and the heroine Sonya's characterization as a prostitute would cause "serious thematic difficulties."
- Columbia's Harry Cohn approved the project in part because Dostoevsky's novel, first published in 1866, was in the public domain, so the film would require no copyright fees.
