Plot summary
In the North Woods, Forest Ranger Charles Carter finds tussock moths at work in the timber. Henry Mitchell owns the forest's exclusive logging rights, and dead trees would let him cut without restrictions. Carter tries to telephone the report, finds the line dead, and rides for town. Along the trail, Gene Autry and the forester Joe Lucas, who have been drinking, spot a mountain lion and Gene shoots at it. Carter is found with a bullet in him, and Gene takes the blame for the shot. Cleared at the inquest, he sells his camp, leaves the money to Carter's daughter Helen, discovers the infestation himself, and takes on the job of spraying the infested woods from the air with DDT.
