Plot summary
Chuck Reardon works as a sideshow caller at an African circus, advertising the human cannonball act of his friend Hubert Frazier, known as Fearless. Fearless swaps in a dummy at the last minute, and the burning prop sets the tent ablaze, so the two flee. At a restaurant, the diamond baron Charles Kimble sends champagne and talks Chuck into spending everything on the deed to one of his diamond mines. Fearless ends their partnership, then comes back with money from selling the mine to Monsieur Lebec, who wants the pair along to see it. The men get away by boat and head inland, where Julia Quimby says her friend Donna LaTour is to be sold at a slave auction and asks for help. The women talk them into a safari, and both men compete for Donna's attention.

- Paramount owned a Sy Bartlett story called "Find Colonel Fawcett" about two men trekking through the jungles of Madagascar, but felt it was too close to the recently released Stanley and Livingstone to film as written, so they handed it to Frank Butler and Don Hartman, the writers of the hit Road to Singapore.
- The song "Birds of a Feather" was written to be sung by Bing Crosby, but in the finished film it was only included as background music.
