Plot summary
Wealthy restaurateur Harvey Howard, a widower of 51, enrolls at college to earn the bachelor's degree he never got, and his grown children Harvey Jr. and Laura strongly disapprove. He refuses any special treatment and takes a freshman room assignment, sharing quarters with Bob Bannerman, T.J. Padmanagham and Gil Sparrow, with Professor Thayer as dorm advisor. President Byrne welcomes the class, the phys ed coach doubts him until he does ten plus one pull-ups, and a bonfire must beat the previous year's height. Harvey meets Helene Gauthier, the French teacher, while hauling a wooden box from under her porch. Pledging a fraternity brings a hazing period, and the roommates seal their bond with a toast of sauerkraut juice.

- The picture was first called Big Daddy and built around Gary Cooper as the 51-year-old freshman. When Cooper's terminal illness made him turn the part down, Bing Crosby took it and the script was rewritten to suit him.
- Wake Forest University in North Carolina had been told it would host the shoot, only for Fox to move production to California; publicist Frank McCarthy explained that after watching rehearsals the studio felt the action did not match the campus traditions. Wake Forest landmarks were written into the script as a consolation.
- The Screen Actors Guild strike shut the production down on 7 March 1960, and Fabian's manager was reported to be trying to buy the film outright so it could be finished. Columnist Hedda Hopper mocked the idea, and shooting only resumed on 12 April.
- The film introduced The Second Time Around, which was nominated for Best Original Song at the 33rd Academy Awards and was the last song Bing Crosby introduced to earn that nomination. Frank Sinatra then turned it into a hit single.
- Henry Mancini's title tune had a second life from 1961 as the opening theme of Mr. Peppermint, a children's programme that ran for decades around Dallas and Fort Worth.
