Plot summary
Hiram Brighton, a wealthy racing executive, has to leave town, so he asks his friend Michael Shayne, a private detective with no work coming in, to watch his spirited daughter Phyllis and keep her away from the betting windows and the roulette wheels. Phyllis has been losing money at the tables and has taken up with Harry Grange, an underworld figure her father cannot stand. She gives Shayne the slip and returns to gambling. To bring her to her senses, Shayne stages a fake killing of Grange: the man is drugged, driven out to the woods and left in a convertible smeared with ketchup, while Shayne tells the police that a murder has happened there. Phyllis's Aunt Olivia, a reader of murder mysteries, takes an interest in the case.
