Plot summary
Stephen is a tutor at Oxford, married to Rosalind and in his forties. William, one of his students, is rich and easy to like, and Stephen is fond of him. Stephen's other student is Anna, an Austrian, and he keeps his desire for her to himself. William is drawn to Anna too. Rosalind is away to give birth to their third child; while she is gone, Stephen spends a night in London with a woman he once loved. His colleague Charley has also been meeting Anna at Stephen's house.
