Plot summary
Vicky Barton and her brother Johnny arrive in Paris from Naples for the 1889 Exposition Universelle and check into the Hôtel de la Licorne. It is Vicky's first visit to the city, and she takes her tired brother to dinner and on to the Moulin Rouge before going up to bed, while Johnny stays below for a late drink. That night the English painter George Hathaway, dropping off Rhoda O'Donovan and her mother at the hotel, asks Johnny for change for a hundred-franc note and takes his name and room number so the money can be repaid. In the morning Vicky finds Johnny gone and a blank wall where his room stood. Madame Hervé says she arrived alone, and Narcisse and the day porter agree. With no proof, the British consul and the French police can do little.

- The plot is drawn from a 19th-century urban legend known as "The Vanishing Hotel Room" or "The Vanishing Lady", which inspired many other works; its first published version was Nancy Vincent McClelland's "A Mystery of the Paris Exposition" in The Philadelphia Inquirer in 1897.
- Benjamin Frankel's score includes a sequence for a carriage ride that went on to become a popular light concert piece called Carriage and Pair; in 2006 the film's music was released on CD with the scores of The Curse of the Werewolf, The Net and The Prisoner.
- The French actress Françoise Rosay was to have been cast in the film, but she dropped out to go to Hollywood instead.
