Plot summary
The police find Agnes Huston strangled in her bedroom, the fortune teller the fair knew as Madame Astra. Superintendent Lodge questions the people around her, and each account plays out as a flashback. Her neighbor Mrs. Finch remembers a gentlewoman and calls her sister Catherine rude. Catherine remembers a drunk who accused her of an affair with Charles. Catherine's boyfriend Bob Baker, a magician, says Agnes took a script for a mentalism act and ignored it, then threw him out. Albert Pollard, a pet shop owner, describes her kindly and says she agreed to marry him. Michael Murray, a merchant sailor, saw her between voyages and promised to write.
