Alexander Knox

Biography

Alexander Knox was a Canadian actor and writer whose film, television and stage credits ran to more than 100 between the 1920s and the late 1980s. Born in Strathroy, Ontario, he studied at the University of Western Ontario before joining the Boston Repertory Theatre and later settling in London, England, where he acted on stage and in films. Darryl F. Zanuck cast him as Woodrow Wilson in Wilson (1944), a role that brought him a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. Work in America became harder to find, and he worked mainly in Britain thereafter. His films included The Sea Wolf (1941), None Shall Escape (1944), The Vikings (1958), The Damned (1962) and Modesty Blaise (1966). He played Control in the 1979 BBC miniseries Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, often worked with director Joseph Losey, and wrote adventure novels and plays.

Darryl F. Zanuck picked Knox to star in Wilson, the 1944 biographical film about American President Woodrow Wilson. For that role, Knox received a Golden Globe Award and a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor.
