Plot summary
British intelligence holds that Professor Sharpey, a scientist at a university laboratory, passed secrets to the Soviet Union and that shame over betraying his country led him to take his own life. His former colleague Dr. Henry Longman disputes that account. Sharpey had been conducting sensory-deprivation experiments on himself, and Longman argues that the procedure may have made him open to brainwashing, so that his conduct was not his own. Longman volunteers to undergo the same treatment to test the theory. An intelligence officer, Major Hall, and a colleague, Dr. Danny Tate, will attempt to turn Longman against Oonagh, his wife, and see whether a man can be made to act against his strongest feelings.
