Stanley Baker
Biography
Stanley Baker was a Welsh actor and film producer who became one of Britain's leading male film stars in the late 1950s. He was born in Ferndale, Glamorgan, and began his career in the West End. After the Second World War he spent time in the Royal Army Service Corps and then returned to acting. The Cruel Sea (1953) helped establish him in films. He took the lead in Hell Drivers (1957) and a supporting part in The Guns of Navarone (1961). Laurence Olivier chose him for Henry Tudor in Richard III (1955). He produced and starred in Zulu (1964) as John Chard. For Yesterday's Enemy he received a BAFTA nomination for Best British Actor, and he also earned a Primetime Emmy nomination for his role in the BBC version of How Green Was My Valley. He received a knighthood in 1976 and died that year.

A role that slipped away
While he was in New York, Stanley Baker read Nicholas Monsarrat's novel The Cruel Sea. Donald Sinden was screen-tested as Bennett and Baker as Lockhart, but Jack Hawkins suggested swapping the roles after further screen-tests.
Big break
Laurence Olivier selected Stanley Baker to play Henry Tudor in Richard III (1955), and this role gave his career another boost.
First role
Cy Endfield wrote and directed Child in the House, the 1956 feature film that gave Baker his first leading role.
A role that slipped away
Baker was replaced by George Baker in Tread Softly Stranger, the film he had been meant to make with Diana Dors.
