Plot summary
The seven Hook children, five to fourteen years old, live in a dilapidated house in suburban London with their invalid single mother. Her chronic illness has led her to fundamentalist religion, and she refuses medical help. When she dies, the children fear being split up and sent to orphanages, so they conceal the death. The children bury her in the back yard at night and turn the garden shed into a shrine. Elsa, the eldest, takes charge. The children excuse their mother's absence to their neighbors and teachers.

- Dirk Bogarde, arriving for his first day on the gloomy house set in Croydon, found a jam jar stuffed with privet and wilting Michaelmas daisies in the caravan he used to change in, and beneath it a note from the seven child actors: 'Let's hope you're as good as you're cracked up to be. You'd better be. Sincerely, The Children.'
- Richard Burton was Jack Clayton's first choice to play Charlie Hook in Our Mother's House, but it was thought his fee would push the budget too high, so Dirk Bogarde was cast in the part instead.
- Jack Clayton found Jeremy Brooks' adaptation of Julian Gloag's novel Our Mother's House too long and too close to its source, so he brought in his own wife, the Israeli-born actress and writer Haya Harareet, who tightened the structure and changed the ending.
