A first
During five years in a German prisoner-of-war camp, Kydd acted in, devised and staged plays. Offered repatriation after three years, he refused it to keep up his theatrical work, and the Red Cross gave him drama masks fashioned from barbed wire.
A first
Kydd's Crane character, the smuggler Orlando O'Connor, proved so popular that when the series ended he was given his own children's adventure show, Orlando, which ran for 126 episodes from 1965 to 1968.
A change of course
During the mid-1930s Kydd entered talent contests. Oscar Rabin noticed him and gave him work as an MC for the Oscar Rabin Band and as one of his "Hot Shots".
A first
Kydd acted in over 290 movies, a total no other British actor has matched, and 119 of those came out between 1946 and 1952.
