Plot summary
During 1943, Wing Commander Tim Mason commands 188 Squadron, a Lancaster bomber unit based in England. He is near the end of a third tour of operations and has flown almost ninety missions over Germany, and twice he has volunteered to carry on flying. Then orders arrive that ground him. Losses mount, and several raids are judged failures, and some of his crews, Bill Brown and Peter Greeno among them, believe a jinx is following the squadron. Mason wants his men focused and keeps women off the base, but he meets Eve Canyon, a widowed Wren, and the American observer Mac Baker is interested in her too.

- Australian actor Peter Finch was originally set to play the Australian character Bill Brown, but had to withdraw because of other commitments and recommended fellow Australian Bill Kerr, who was given the part instead.
- The production used three genuine Lancaster B VII bombers, serial numbers NX673, NX679 and NX782, which also appeared in The Dam Busters two years later, and some ground shots dressed up later Avro Lincoln bombers as Lancasters.
