Plot summary
During the Second World War, Lieutenant Graham is given a mission on Rhodes. Two Italian airfields there are home to aircraft that threaten Egypt, and his orders are to destroy them. Six commandos serve under him, along with two Greek officers and two guides from the island. A submarine carries the party to Rhodes and puts them ashore after dark on an empty beach. From there the men must cross the mountains to reach their targets, and at an appointed place the party will divide into two raiding groups. Enemy troops are numerous on the island.

- Director Lewis Milestone made his cast wear real 90 lb (40 kg) backpacks because he thought actors could not convincingly fake the weight; after a week of exercises with them the load was cut to 60 lbs (27 kg).
