Plot summary
Robbie is seven and orphaned, placed with adoptive parents in London who treat him harshly. When he starts a small fire in the house by accident, he expects the severe punishment he has been given before and slips out into the streets. There he runs into Chris Lloyd, who is in flight after killing his wife's employer in the heat of passion, a man he had found to be having an affair with his wife. Robbie stays with Lloyd, who tries again and again to rid himself of the boy, though as thoughtfully as he can. Lloyd decides to use the boy to collect money he needs from his apartment, and after that he feels compelled to bring Robbie along.

- Jon Whiteley won the role of Robbie after a friend of director Charles Crichton heard him reciting "The Owl and the Pussycat" on the radio on The Children's Hour. Whiteley was then called in for a screen test and cast.
- The film's railway sequence was shot on the now-defunct Potteries Loop Line. British railway enthusiasts regard the scene as historically significant because it is a very rare filmic depiction of the long-gone line in operation.
