Plot summary
Monica, the older wife of Edward "Teddy" Bare, has been married to him for a year and drinks heavily at his urging. When she tells her lawyer, Phillip Mortimer, that she wants her will rewritten, Edward kills her and arranges the room so the death looks like an accident with the gas fire. Monica had meant to leave him everything, but the will that stands gives him the house and puts her fortune in trust for her sister Dora, who is in Jamaica. An inquest calls the death accidental. Edward meets Freda Jeffries, a widow, at a seaside hotel and courts her, then brings her to the house he inherited. Freda is closer to his age than Monica and much more careful with her money.

- Dirk Bogarde turned down the lead in Janet Green's 1952 play Murder Mistaken, so Derek Farr played it; Lewis Gilbert saw the play while making The Sea Shall Not Have Them, thought it would make a good film, and persuaded Bogarde to take the part.
- Dirk Bogarde helped get Margaret Lockwood to co-star in Cast a Dark Shadow, and Lockwood said she was "dubious about being able to play such a character, though I liked her honesty."
- After making this film, Margaret Lockwood did not appear in a feature film for another 21 years; in 1973 she said, "I'm glad I did it, but am still wondering exactly where it got me."
- Dirk Bogarde said the film was the first time he had been billed under another star's name, Margaret Lockwood; seeing a Cardiff poster during a theater tour, he found the billing altered to put "with Margaret Lockwood" at the bottom because the film was dying.
