Eric Pohlmann
Biography
Eric Pohlmann was an Austrian actor who built his career largely in Britain, taking character parts in more than 200 film and television productions. Born in Vienna, he trained at the Max Reinhardt Seminar and started out at the Raimund Theater. After the war he worked on the West End stage, and in 1956 he took the role of J.J. Peachum in Sam Wanamaker's Royal Court staging of The Threepenny Opera. His heavy build led to typecasting as master criminals, spies, police officers and detectives, and he was often cast as foreigners. Among his films were The Third Man (1949), Mogambo (1953), Gentlemen Marry Brunettes (1955), Lust for Life (1956), Carry on Spying (1964) and The Return of the Pink Panther (1975). He provided the voice of Ernst Stavro Blofeld in the James Bond films From Russia with Love (1963) and Thunderball (1965), and on television played Inspector Goron in Colonel March of Scotland Yard from 1954 to 1955.

In the James Bond films From Russia with Love and Thunderball, the unseen head of SPECTRE, Ernst Stavro Blofeld, was voiced by Pohlmann, who went uncredited.
Beyond film
After the war, Pohlmann began working on the West End stage. In 1956 he took the part of J.J. Peachum in The Threepenny Opera, staged at the Royal Court by Sam Wanamaker.

In 2006, Turner Classic Movies chose Pohlmann as the actor around whom it built its entire "31 Days of Oscar" festival schedule, based on the theme "360 Degrees of Oscar".
