Plot summary
Unemployed writer Nicholas Whistler is sent by the employment exchange to an interview with Colonel Cunliffe, who presents himself as the head of a glass company. Cunliffe learns that Whistler speaks Czech and offers him a large salary and expenses. Whistler is told to meet a man who will answer to the phrase "Hot Enough for June", and is sent to Prague that same day. There a driver and guide, Vlasta, takes him to inspect a glass factory, where a washroom attendant gives the coded reply.

- After Dirk Bogarde first turned down the lead, the producers approached Tom Courtenay, who agreed to take it; Bogarde then changed his mind again after his manager told him he needed the money.
- American producer Hal Wallis originally bought the rights to Lionel Davidson's novel to make the film with Laurence Harvey, but after the two fell out the rights went to Rank and producer Betty E. Box.
- Art director Syd Cain had done the same job on the first two James Bond films, so the offices of Colonel Cunliffe's glass company were deliberately made almost an exact match to M's outer waiting room and offices in the early Bond films.
- Sylva Koscina, cast as Vlasta in this film, had been considered for the role of Tatiana Romanova in From Russia with Love.
