Plot summary
Pop Wonder owns the Wonder Circus, which arrives in town with Jumbo the elephant as its featured attraction, along with a company of specialty acts. Pop has gambled the earnings at craps games, and three creditors come to demand repayment. Kitty Wonder, his daughter, promises them a sellout that night. Two of the circus performers accept offers from the John Noble Circus, and the high-wire star, the Great Mantino, quits for the same rival. When his act is called and no one steps forward, a newcomer hired as a tent hand, Sam, performs on the wire in his place. Impressed, Pop hires him.

- Stage producer Billy Rose insisted that any film version of the musical Jumbo credit him in its title, even if he had nothing to do with making it.
- Choreographer Busby Berkeley came out of retirement to work on Billy Rose's Jumbo, and it proved to be his last film.
- The Broadway musical Jumbo, the basis of the film, opened on November 16, 1935, and was the last musical staged at the New York Hippodrome before the theater was demolished in 1939.
- In 1950, it was announced that Arthur Freed would produce and that Howard Keel and Jimmy Durante would star, but litigation delayed production for many years.
- Actor Stephen Boyd did not sing his own numbers in the film: his singing voice was dubbed by studio singer Jimmy Joyce.
