Chuck Roberson
Biography
Chuck Roberson was an American actor and stuntman who grew up on a ranch outside Roswell, New Mexico, and quit school at 13 for work as a cowhand and oilfield roughneck. He moved to California and joined the Culver City police, guarding the gate at MGM, then returned to that job after army service in World War II. A strike assignment at Warner Bros. introduced him to the stuntman Guy Teague, who told him about work at Republic Pictures. Resembling John Carroll, Roberson doubled him in his first film, Wyoming (1947), while also handling stunts and small parts. Bigger supporting roles in Westerns for John Wayne and John Ford followed, along with second-unit directing on films including Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970). His television Westerns ranged from The Lone Ranger and Gunsmoke to Bonanza and The Big Valley, and he played a Confederate prison captain in The Great Locomotive Chase (1956).
