Plot summary
Alec Longmire earns his living with a gun. During a shootout, a fellow gunman whose life Longmire had once saved returns the favor and spares him, and Longmire promises to give up his trade. He rides into a town where the only opening is a deputy's badge under sheriff Jade Murphy, an honest lawman caught in the middle of a quarrel between small farmers and a cattle baron. Longmire takes the post and stays, drawn to Murphy's daughter Caroline, who wants nothing to do with a man of his reputation, and hoping his skill with firearms can now serve the law.
