Hugh Marlowe
Biography
Hugh Marlowe was an American actor who worked in film, television, stage, and radio. He began on stage in 1930s California at the Pasadena Playhouse, initially under his birth name, then moved to Broadway roles in plays such as Kiss the Boys Goodbye and Lady in the Dark. On radio he played Ellery Queen in an early version of The Adventures of Ellery Queen. He was usually a supporting player on screen, and he appeared regularly in 20th Century Fox productions of the period, among them All About Eve (1950), Twelve O'Clock High (1949), Monkey Business (1952), and The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951). Among his other films were Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), Birdman of Alcatraz (1962), Elmer Gantry (1960), and Seven Days in May (1964). On television he guest-starred widely, including six episodes of Perry Mason, and from 1969 to 1982 he played Jim Matthews on the daytime drama Another World.

Marlowe started acting on stage during the 1930s at the Pasadena Playhouse in California. He first used his birth name, then John Marlowe, and later took Hugh Marlowe as his stage name.
Beyond film
Marlowe did voice work on two network radio shows in 1939 and 1940. He was Jim Curtis on the soap opera Brenda Curtis, and he voiced Ellery Queen in the first radio adaptation of The Adventures of Ellery Queen.
