Gavin Gordon

Biography

Gavin Gordon was an American actor whose career ran across film, television and radio. Born in Chicora, Mississippi, he moved to Mobile, Alabama as a young man and studied stenography after being told his southern accent would limit his stage work. While working as a stenographer in Chicago he met the actor Grant Mitchell, who helped him begin a stage career in Detroit in 1922 with the Jessie Bonstelle Players. He acted opposite Jane Cowl in Romeo and Juliet, played in stock in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and appeared on Broadway in The Outsider, Celebrity (1927) and The Devil's Disciple (1950). Small studio roles from 1927 led to his casting as Greta Garbo's leading man in Romance (1930), after which his film work was made up largely of small or uncredited parts and radio dramas. He also appeared on television programs including Perry Mason and Green Acres, and his final film was The Nutty Professor (1963). He died in 1983.
