Biography

David Rasche is an American actor whose work spans theater, film, and television. After training under Sanford Meisner and performing with Chicago's Second City, he starred in the Organic Theater's 1974 staging of David Mamet's Sexual Perversity in Chicago. He began appearing on screen in the late 1970s, making his film debut in An Unmarried Woman and playing a small part in Woody Allen's Manhattan (1979). His widest exposure came with the title role in Sledge Hammer!, the satirical police sitcom that ran from 1986 to 1988, and he has often played authority figures in both serious and comic turns. On film, he played a photographer in Cobra (1986) and a corrupt narcotics officer in An Innocent Man (1989). He later portrayed a passenger in United 93 and a US official in In the Loop (2009). On television he was Karl Muller on Succession from 2018 to 2023, and he played Alden Schmidt on Impastor.

  1. A change of course

    Before acting took over, Rasche worked as a writer and teacher, spending two years teaching English at Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota.

  2. Early training

    Rasche studied at Chicago's Second City improvisation group and then performed there for two years. He also helped fund Victory Gardens Theater in Chicago.

    Rasche appeared in Organic Theater's 1974 staging of David Mamet's Sexual Perversity in Chicago after his time at Second City. That production helped establish the playwright's signature mix of earthy, sometimes brutal dialogue.
